Machine Learning in Bioinformatics
Head of Research Group: Prof. Dr. Fabian Kern
Our research group develops and explores computational approaches in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with a particular focus on biomolecular research questions. Building on concepts from computer science and mathematics, we adapt these methods to biological data for both hypothesis-driven investigations and open-ended fundamental research. A central emphasis is placed on integrating deep learning with symbolic AI, advancing statistical learning, and addressing complex optimization problems with bioinformatics relevance.
We apply our methods across a broad spectrum of biological and medical domains — including single-cell analysis, bio- and pharmaceutical research, and the study of neurodegenerative diseases. For example, our approaches have been employed to predict neurological effects associated with COVID-19.
Our overarching goal is to translate emerging techniques from computer science into the life sciences and medicine — through robust, interpretable models and close interdisciplinary collaboration.
