Lehre

Our working group offers courses in machine learning and deep learning with applications in bioinformatics. These include both lectures and seminars. In addition, we supervise theses (bachelor's and master's theses) on current research topics and offer committed students the opportunity to get involved in our projects as student assistants (HiWi).

Bachelor's and master's theses

We appreciate your interest in writing your bachelor's or master's thesis in our working group. If you would like to apply to write your thesis with us, please send us a short email with the following information to kern-office.zbh(at)uni-hamburg.de(kern-office.zbh"AT"uni-hamburg.de):

  • Which degree program you are studying
  • Which study semester you are in
  • A current Transcript of Records
  • Whether you have already been admitted to write your thesis or what requirements you still need to fulfill in order to be admitted
  • Which courses you are attending this semester
  • Your desired start date and duration of writing the thesis
  • If desired, topic interests or specific topic requests
  • Additional information that may be relevant to us (e.g., prior knowledge, special interests)

After receiving your message, we will contact you shortly to arrange an appointment and discuss possible topics and the further procedure.

Notes on final theses

Before finally registering your thesis, we ask all interested students to prepare a short mini-report (approx. 2 pages plus timetable and references), which will serve as a guide for identifying a topic and providing supervision. The aim of this report is to demonstrate that you have already dealt with the topic in terms of content and to establish a common understanding of the planned research work and its scope.

The mini-report should contain the following elements:

  • Introduction with overview of related work
  • Description of the task and the desired goals
  • Outline of the planned implementation, with particular regard to:
    • planned or potenital data sets
    • planned or potential methods

The text should not exceed two pages (excluding the cover page, bibliography, and optional illustrations). Please include a table with a rough time schedule for completing your work. A LaTeX template for the mini-report and final paper will be provided.

Please note: The content mentioned in the mini-report serves as an initial guide. As the work progresses, data sets, methods, or individual goals may of course change or be further developed accordingly.
